3 Ways to Plant Seeds of Positivity
I cannot think of a better day to begin planting seeds of positivity in our own lives and nation. After surviving another election season it is time to lick our wounds and mend some ties. With all of the negativity which is slung around during this time, I almost feel the need for a cleansing bath. Some way to remove all of this muck off of myself. Otherwise I will carry this negativity around like a heavy weight dragging me down.
The effects of negativity on our lives are well documented. Especially coming out of a season where we have been constantly told how awful our lives will be if the other candidate wins. This negativity can take a deep hold upon us and have an adverse effect on our lives. It is extremely important that we understand the effects of this negativity and make intentional steps to counteract this effect in our lives.
If we let negativity sink into our lives it eventually takes root in our souls. When we are exposed to a constant barrage of negative ads reflecting our life we can end up feeling:
1) Less worthwhile about life
2) Less confidence in our abilities
3) Lower self-esteem
4) Lower lever of happiness and enjoyment
5) Less peace
6) Impact on health in a variety of ways
There are many studies out there which all point to the adverse effect negativity has on our lives. Since we live in a world which is bent toward the negative we need to use laser focus in attempting to overcome this constant flow of negative messages in our lives.
In order to perpetuate a more positive attitude there are a few steps you can take to create a more positive atmosphere in your life today.
1) Know Yourself
The greatest, and probably most difficult step, you need to take is to know yourself. One of the main reasons you project negativity is the poor view you have of yourself. Because of shame from your past, poor self-esteem, bad role models, or a view of yourself which you think you do not have what it takes. You want to bring others down to your level. If you can cut people down at the knees and get them down to your level, then you have no need to rise up to their level.
This type of thinking is dangerous and will lead us down a treacherous path. Negative thinking will always lead you down the rabbit hole and is the number one cause of depression. You need to know yourself enough to recognize these actions and their effects on others.
You need to understand your past, your triggers, what makes you angry, and if you are negative why are you attempting to convey this type of attitude. In knowing yourself and why you function the way you do, you are beginning the process of cutting negativity off at the knees. You begin to understand life is good and it can be extraordinary, if I am willing to put the work in to make it happen.
Begin the process today of knowing yourself better. Understand what direction your life and emotions are facing and begin the process of directing them in a more positive manner.
2) Be Positive
Next you need to be positive. Now this sounds much easier than actually getting it accomplished, but it is that easy. Every morning when you get out of bed you simply need to choose to be positive. Because believe it or not you have a choice.
When you wake up and it is snowy or raining, be grateful for the moisture instead of upset the impact the weather will have on your day. After your child spills their cereal, use it as a time to work together because life is full of little messes we need to clean up, but should not let it ruin our day. When your job takes you someplace physically or mentally you were not prepared for. Use the time to understand why it bothers you. Are there adjustments you can make either minor or major to learn from this experience.
Being positive is a state of mind. In order to be positive you need to know your mind, which is why you need to know yourself. Remember, in any situation it is much easier to go negative, than to go positive. But like any habit the more you respond in a positive manner them more likely you are to be positive regardless of the situation.
3) Spread Positivity
Now you need to spread your positivity. What you project onto others is not only how they see you, but also can have an effect on their attitude. If you spread negativity, especially as a leader or parent, then this is what your employees or children will absorb and project themselves. Negativity is contagious and can spread like a bad cold.
On the other hand if you are positive then you are spreading something far more lovely and contagious. We need more positivity in our lives. We need to see more clearly the life ahead of us and the beauty for which it contains. Be conscientious today about your words, are they positive or negative. Your thoughts, which way are they going in ever circumstances. And then simply smile. A smile can go a long way and could be a much needed boost to those around you.
In this day, where negativity has been spread like a wildfire, I challenge you to be positive. Spread the love, compliment someone’s outfit. Smile at a stranger. And spread positive thoughts and ideas all throughout this day. Regardless of which side of the fence you sat on during the election, we are all in this together. Let’s make the most of it and change the world for the better with a smile.
