5 Reasons Why You Are A Warrior
One of the most overlooked aspects of living with a limitation of chronic pain or illness is the warrior inside of you. You are a warrior, because every day is a battle and everyday your fight. This is no small task, nor should it be ignored or simply cast aside as some insignificant attribute. A warrior is a badge of honor you should wear proudly and the following are some reasons why:
1) You Fight Every Day
The first reason you are a warrior is you fight every day. You have to deal with the “normal” problems everyone else faces like finances, jobs, traffic, overcrowded schedules, and purpose. But layer on top of these issues the added problems of simply attempting to get out of bed. Trying to find a doctor who will listen to your specific pains. Finding medication which will work without the side-effects completely side-lining you. Then there is the constant justification and explaining to friends, loved ones, and co-workers about why you cannot always bring your A-game.
In order to not completely implode on any given day, you fight. You fight to stay engaged, you fight to stay in the game of life, you fight to stay relevant to your friends and family. This is certainly not the life you signed up for, nor ever wanted, but you are not giving up. You fight because it is the only life you have and you are making the most out of what you have been given.
2) You Get Up Off the Mat
When a fighter gets knocked down to the mat, there is a discernible difference between those who choose to stay down and those who get back up and fight. It is easy to stay down. Most days you want to stay down, you are tired, you are exhausted, and you don’t want to fight any longer. But you do get up, you use every ounce of energy to get up and keep fighting, because you know your life is worth fighting for.
No one around you has any idea how much energy you have exhausted to just “show up”. How much it has taken out of you mentally, physically, and emotionally to simply be present. But you are, because you are fighter. You get up off the mat every day and fight because you are living an extraordinary life.
3) You Win Everyday
The next reason you are a warrior is because you not only fight everyday, you win everyday. Think about it for a moment you are a winner. You have all been there those nights lying in bed in a fetal position in so much pain you do not know how you are going to make it through the night, much less survive another day. But you do. Because you choose to fight, you win. And you win everyday because you fight.
This again is not small or insignificant task. You have a tremendous burden to bear. A burden placed upon that would crush other individuals. But you stand firm, you stand against the tide and you win. It takes a mighty warrior to stand up in the face of an unrelenting foe and not back down. That does not mean you are not scared or have those momentary break-downs. Those are fine. But you get back up to fight another day, because you choose to never let your limitation win.
4) You Overcome Fear
The next reason you are a warrior is because you overcome fear. It is frightening to be in a situation where you do not know when it will end, you do not know how it will effect your relationships, you job, or the rest of your life. It is unnerving to take a new medication where you do not know how it will affect you. It is overwhelming to look in the mirror and wonder if this is all life has to offer.
But you are a warrior. Even though you are scared and there is fear you are not paralyzed by the fear. You stand firm, you stand tall, and you face you pain head on. Living in pain is by no means a fun place to exist. You long for something greater, something else, but you wake up everyday and face the fear in front of you because you are going to live a better adventure than what is expected of someone living a life of pain.
5) You Walked Though the Fire
The last reason you are a warrior is because you have walked through the fire. This may be literally or figuratively depending upon your pain. You have been laid in the fire and forged into a unique individual which very few people can begin to understand. The depths of your suffering and how you do rise above them everyday has created the person you have become.
The fire exposes your truest instincts and personalities. When you walk through the fire you will either let it consume you, or you will let it purify you. If you have chosen the later then you are truly a warrior. A person who chooses to own their pain on a daily basis instead of letting it own them.
Never, ever let anyone tell you that you are not a mighty warrior. This is an ignorant statement from someone who has no clue as to what you deal with on a daily basis. Be encouraged, be strengthened by what you deal with and conquer every single day. Keep fighting, because if you keep fighting then you will be making a difference in your own life and in this world. That is a purpose worth fighting for.
