Breaking the “One Day When… Then I will…” Lie!
The greatest distractor of our dreams is when we believe the “One day when…” lie! This single lie, which we will hang onto like a childhood toy, tells us once conditions are perfect then we can pursue our dreams.
One Day When…
This is the lie which tells us “one day when…” I feel better, my job changes, I have more money, I am not in as much pain, I have more time, the kids are older, have a bigger house, live in a different neighborhood, have more education, more experience, or more understanding. One day when my current circumstances change, or whatever lie or belief you have been using, insert into this sentence, this is the point life will be good.
For you truly believe if you attain such unicorn status then it will be the magic point where you can live your dreams. It is at this point you will move on with your life, pursue your passions, and do all those things you promised yourself when you were younger.
The problem is this magical day will never arrive. It is a built in excuse mechanism you tell yourself to justify never pursuing a life which will make you fully alive.
Why we believe the lie
You will hang onto this lie for many years and for many reasons. But the main reason is fear. This fear can come in many forms. You may fear what life will really look like if you pursued your dreams. You fear you don’t deserve this type of life. You fear you don’t have what it takes to live this life. Or you fear you will just be disappointed by what you find around the corner.
No matter what the fear is, you have used it as an excuse to believe the lie and stay in your current life without ever making any type of transformation.
How to Break the Lie!
How do you break the lie you have believed for so many years?
1) Start Now
You need to start and do it now! Waiting on some magical day is only wasting valuable time. There truly is no better time than the present. This will be one of the greatest hurdles you face and one of the main reasons why you have not begun to pursue your passion. You may not know where to begin, what to do, or how to start so you put it off and make excuses.
Just do it. There is no wrong way.
When I knew I wanted to write a book, I had no idea what to do. So I just started writing. I would write a blog everyday in an Evernote folder. No one would read these blogs and they still sit in that folder. What I was doing was beginning a process. From those first writings I was learning how to write, how to edit, how to write better, and how to form a story. From there I began to publish a blog and then started the process of writing a book which was published last year. I really had no idea what I was doing through the entire process, but I looked at it as a year of new beginnings. But it never would have happened if I never would have started.
The journey of 1000 miles does begin with one step. You need to start yours today and take the first step.
2) Just Do It!
Once you start, stick with it. You need to wake up every day and just do it! if you love it, you will do it no matter the circumstances. This is why Nike’s slogan resonates with so many people. Your love of running will get up in any type of weather and run. If you love to write you will wake up early and write no matter how you feel or the lack of thoughts in your head. It is the passion you will sneak away during any free time to pursue. If you are doing what you love then you will just do it!
3) Enjoy the Journey
In the process of pursuing your dream make sure you enjoy the pathway you are currently traveling. Breaking the lie does not necessarily mean your life will dramatically change. But it is a start. Once you have gotten onto this new pathway then begin to enjoy your current journey. There will be pitfalls, you will go off the trail, and everything will not go as planned, but that is fine. You are beginning to live life on your terms and pursue your dreams and that is a wonderful thing. Never underestimate what you can learn on this journey and keep your eyes open to those experiences where you can learn more.
Just because it is a dream or passion doesn’t mean that it will come easy. Especially in the beginning. You are going to have to work at it, make sacrifices, and probably work harder than you ever have in your life. But it is worth it. The saying “Do something you love and you never have to work a day in your life!” will begin to resonate. It will be work and you are going to have to put in the time and hustle, but it will be worth it.
This may mean waking up early, watching less television, less time on social media, or staying up later. Especially if you are still working a full-time job. But if you have finally found the pathway to your dreams then you want to pursue this with all your might.
5) Believe in Yourself
The last, and probably most important, is you believe in yourself. You do have what it takes to pursue your dreams. There may be skills you need to add to your toolbox, which is fine and understandable. Begin the process of seeing what those look like and begin to add them in slowly. But don’t underestimate your own skills, talents, and abilities. Not believing in yourself usually pushes us to believe the “One day when…” lie.
The bottom line is you have something truly remarkable and unique to offer others. But the world will never get to see what you have to give until you begin to show it to the world. Stop believing the lies which are keeping you from pursuing your dreams and taking the next step. Go big for your one day is right now!
