The Foundation of Transformation Through Habits
You probably would not have to think very long to come up with an area of your life which is in need of transformation. Whether it be health, finances, attitude, business, too much time on technology, or family. You have a desire to make a part of your life better. The problem is how to get to the point of transforming your life.
Transformation begins with better habits. No transformation will occur without instituting solid habits in your life which align with your overall goal. If you want to lose weight you need to commit to working out and eating right every day. To be a better writer you need to commit to a time to write everyday. If you want to be a better spouse or parent you need to commit to activities everyday which promote that goal.
We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore, is not an act but a habit. – Aristotle
There is no magic pill or fairy dust to insight transformation. Your change will only come about through you committing daily to a habit which will guide you to your goal. This is usually easier to say than to do. But there are reasons we need to commit to a habit in our lives.
1) Creates Focus
A habit can create laser focus in your life. If you want to lose weight then you get up first thing in the morning and commit to an exercise routine. By committing in the morning you align the rest of your day to fall in line with this one habit. You will tend to eat better, and make better decisions aligned with this goal, throughout the day because of your morning routine.
The same can be true with writing, family time, finances, better attitude, or technology. When you commit in the morning you are creating focus throughout your day which supports your habit. There are too many challenges and distractions in our modern life to not have focus in those areas which matter. If you do not protect the space where you want to focus and create good habits it will be taken up by other distractions. Create a positive habit and allow it to create focus throughout your day.
2) Creates Consistency
A habit can also create consistency in your life. If you are committing to write more, better financial management, or starting that side business. When you carve out specific time to work on these projects everyday, then they begin to become habits. You know that at a certain time of day you are going to work on building a consistent habit. Consistency lends itself to structure which is beneficial in building strong habits in your life.
If you are attempting to eat healthier, you need to create a plan for what you will eat everyday. Without the knowledge or preparation of your meals when you get pushed or are lacking time, you will eat whatever is convenient. Which usually is not the healthiest option. Your focus on your habit will create the consistency to turn your habit into a routine, which in turn will transform your life.
3) Eliminates Distractions
Focused habits also have the ability to eliminate the distractions in our lives. When you have committed to a healthier life, more time with the family, or writing more, you will begin to notice more distractions competing for your time. Your focus allows you to keep you concentration on your goal and push aside those activities which are not contributing to your overall transformation.
If you take the time to honestly analyze your life you will find many activities which are nothing but time sucks. Trolling social media, games on your phone, binge watching streaming television, or watching YouTube videos. None of these are bad within themselves, but if they can be detrimental if they are keeping you from your overall transformation. When you commit to a habit be aware of those distractions which will keep you from achieving success and guard your time vigilantly.
Our modern lives are filled with a million different activities which will distract you or unknowingly create a bad habit in your life. Take the time to evaluate the habits in your life. Then decide which ones need to go and which new better habits need to be introduced into your life.
