The Futile Pursuit of Shiny Objects
How many times are you distracted during the day?
Really, think about this question. Most of us are floating around in a sea of distractions. But we have lived in this space for so long we don’t realize they are distractions or how bad they are actually distracting us from good work. (Are you reading this article because you are distracted from other work you could be doing?) This issue has even had a name bestowed up in, S.O.S. Shiny Object Syndrome.
When you reflect upon your day, how many times were you distracted by email, phone calls, notifications on your phone, texts, social media, YouTube videos, a Netflix show, or random conversations. If you are honest, your life is probably one big distraction.
It is difficult to think, reflect, or concentrate when you are constantly chasing shiny objects. In a constant pursuit of the next great thing, an updated social media post, or place to make money. Although this may be your current position in life, the good news is you do not have to live in a swirl of constant distractions.
Focus on Your Good Work
The first step in eliminating distractions is to focus on YOUR good work. Everyone has some light within them. Some purpose they were created to pursue. This is meaningful, good, and worthwhile work. This purpose is your life-changing good work. But can never be fulfilled in the midst of constantly chasing shiny objects.
You nee to take a step in identifying this good work in your life. It does not have to be something grand like end world hunger. It may be writing a story, creating a process, or picking up trash in your neighborhood. Think about what you can do which is good work and will change a little part of your world and community. This is is your good work and where you need to focus.
Most of these distractions and shiny objects are not bad in and of themselves. They can even be useful or beneficial in your life. The problem becomes when all these distractions pile up throughout the day and you were unable to complete your good and meaningful work.
When you have your good work identified, then begin the process of identifying those shiny objects which are keeping your from your good work. These shiny objects can come in the form of social media, surfing the internet, binge watching your favorite show, or unnecessary meetings. No matter what the distraction looks like ensure you can identify your problem in order to take appropriate action.
Your Solution For Chasing Shiny Objects
Once you have identified your distractions you need to do something about it. The only way to combat this issue is through laser focus. To seek you purpose, potential, or calling (whatever you want to call it) then build your life around this pursuit. When you can focus in on what matters most, the meaningful work.
The moment the meaningful work has risen to the top of your priorities a wonderful process begins. You meaningful work gives you the ability to say no. To begin to eliminate those problems or areas of your life which are not moving your good work forward.
You were meant for more. To maximize and optimize your life. Don’t let distractions get in the way of accomplishing your greatest work. Take the step today and invite positive change into your life.
