A Little Soul Care Goes a Long Way!
Think back to the last time you felt relaxed. The “not a care in the world” living in the moment type of relaxed. The type of looseness which made you forget about everything else going on in your life. For most individuals this feeling will bring back memories of a nice vacation or time with family. Some point where you were able to forget about your cares, and worries, if only for a time.
Why do you think this time was so refreshing? What was your body and soul attempting to tell you as your relaxed?
You know you need to decompress every now and then. The stresses of work, family, and life can get too overwhelming and you need to go some place and unwind. Even though you know this works for you body and mind, the benefits to the soul are often overlooked.
No battery was meant to go forever on one charge. They need to take time to recharge in order to be effective. The same is true with your soul. If you want to be emotionally strong and healthy then you need to take time away in order to recharge your soul.
The benefits of a little soul care can go a long way in your life, career, and relationships.
1) Clearer Vision
There have been times in my life where a major decision has been looming. But I was too busy or distracted to give the decision process the energy it needed for a successful outcome. I would push through the decision only to realize it was not the best choice I could have made.
When I do take the time to take a step back, clear my head, and care or my soul then the decisions which follow come from a clearer vision of life. I am not just looking at the here and now. By taking some rest I have a clearer perspective into how this decision will fit into the overall vision and purpose for my life. When I think on these terms the decision usually becomes clearer and easier to decide.
If you are facing a large decision in your own life then take the time to retreat. Take time to clear your head, calm your soul, and look at your choices from a broader standpoint. A few days away to make a good decision is far better than living a life of poor decisions.
2) Better Attitude
Think about how much better your attitude is when you return from a relaxing time? I do not know many grumpy people who practice rest and take their vacations seriously. But on the other hand I can pick out many people whom I really do not want to be around because they are not pleasant. An issues which could be easily corrected with a little rest.
When you care for your soul you are giving your life perspective. Situations which may have caused heartburn or stress no longer are of a concern because you are again looking at the bigger picture. Instead of jumping from crisis to crisis you remember your purpose and vision and attack only those areas which really matter in pursuing your goals.
In the process your attitude becomes more enjoyable. You are no longer running someone else’s race, but focused in on what you need to accomplish to meet your goals. The end result is doing work you love and loving your work. People living this life are rarely the grumpy disagreeable individuals you meet in life.
3) Less Coping
We have to deal with our stress, our drained batteries, and overloads. How we deal with it is up to us. As a society we have failed to identify and deal with our soul properly. Instead we use unhealthy coping mechanisms in order to numb the pain or fill the void. Drugs, relationships, alcohol, social activities, church, or even work be a distraction from dealing with the real issues. Since most of these coping mechanisms are socially acceptable we are content moving forward with our hectic lives. Even though we know at a deeper level this is not how we were meant to exist.
When you take the time to constantly and consistently care for your soul, what you will realize is the less you will need to cope with life. Your life will become full and meaningful. Once your meaning is clear there is no need to numb any part of your life. You are living life to its fullest with a defied purpose. The coping mechanisms of your past are no longer necessary in your new reality.
4) Cleaner Management
Whether you are attempting to run your home, raise your kids, or manage a major corporation you have a management style. But even the best style can become warped and tainted the longer you run your battery down. Remember the time you snapped at an employee, co-worker, or your child with no cause because your lack of patience from little sleep or rest.
You overall management style becomes cleaner When you care for your soul and take the time to rest with intention. When you are taking the time to focus on the bigger picture, the little disturbances of life are not so annoying. You management is cleaner because you are in a better place.
When it comes to a lack of soul care it has been discovered that “your brain is more likely to misinterpret these cues and to overreact to emotional events, and you tend to express your feelings in a more negative manner and tone of voice. Recent studies have shown that people who have not had enough sleep are less likely to fully trust someone else, and another experiment has demonstrated that employees feel less engaged with their work when their leaders have had a bad night of sleep.” (Nick van Dam and Els van der Helm)
Proper rest and care for your soul can dramatically transform how you engage in every relationship around you. The effects of not taking this step can also destroy many necessary relationships in your life.
One of the last and probably most important reason to care for your soul is simply enjoyment of life. According to a recently released poll by Gallup, only 13 percent of employees are “engaged” in their jobs, or emotionally invested in their work and focused on helping their organizations improve. Do you fully comprehend this statistic? Only 13% of people are engaged in their work. Which means this describes you or a majority of the people you work with.
At the end of 2015 “Enjoy life to the fullest” was the most popular New Year’s resolution. Nearly half (45.7%) of survey respondents were planning to set this as one of their goals for 2016. Why do you think this was the most popular selection for a New Year’s resolutions? If people were already enjoying their life then this would not appear on their list.
The desire for a more enjoyable life resonates with everyone. We either want to enjoy life more or we just want to enjoy life period. We are so caught up in the fast pace, social media, workaholic, don’t miss anything society. We usually discover our burnout when it is too late. But if you can make caring for your soul a daily practice then life becomes more enjoyable because you are focusing on what matters most. The distractions and annoyances of life are stripped away and not becoming a nuisance any longer.
Think this week about how you can better care for your soul. Next week I will walk through some practical steps you can take to better care for your own soul.
