How Are You Making an Intentional Impact?
You are making an impact!
Whether it is a positive or negative impact depends upon how intentional you are with your words, actions, and attitude.
You are making an impact to other people and others are impacting you. The impact could be negative in attitude or actions, which causes you to avoid the individual, or worse, brings you down to their negative attitude. Or the impact could be a positive which drives you to be better and do better in every part of your life.
If you want your impact to be positive and make true change and transformation in this world then there are a few steps you need to take.
1) Know Yourself
Negativity comes from people who have never taken the time to truly know themselves and understand their circumstances. So instead of building people up they need to tear them down in order to feel better about themselves. “Negative thinking is simply thinking about what you do not want, while positive thinking is thinking about what you do want. Ask yourself, do I focus more on what I do want or what I don’t want? For the majority of the world, the answer is the latter. Most people are unconsciously addicted to negative thinking. Negative thinking is not just a bad habit, it is a terrible addiction, and probably directly responsible for every other addiction known to man.”
This is why you need to take the time to truly know yourself, your thoughts, hurts, pains, joys, and what makes you happy. In making these observations, you can make a positive impact on others because you have a desire to see them come alive. You are spending more time thinking about what you do want and understand all of your actions and words have some impact. But until you truly know yourself and your motivation for each gesture, you may not quite understand what type of impact you are having on other individuals. Take the time to truly know yourself and understand your motivations in life.
2) Grow Yourself
Once you know yourself you need to grow yourself. After you have taken an honest look at your life, then it is time to make some real changes. Where do you need to grow either mentally, emotionally, or spiritually?
This may be taking a class in order to learn something new in building your career or starting a new venture. It may be something more personal about diet, health, or exercise. Areas of meditation, how to slow down, or decluttering your life. The point is you have areas of your life which need growth. You usually avoid them because you are too busy to take the time to discover what needs to grow. Or you may be content with where life has currently placed you. But if you are going to make an intentional impact on this life, then you need take the time to prepare yourself to make an impact.
You would never enter any large adventure unprepared or ill-prepared. Why risk it with one of the most important aspects of your life? Take the time to research how you can make an impact and what path will take you there.
3) Be Intentional
Transformation will never happen on accident, but only through intentional actions. If you are truly going to make an impact in this life then you are going to be intentional about your actions, words, and choices.
It does not take much effort to be a jerk, self-centered, or greedy. If we are honest with ourselves, these types of actions take little effort on our part.
This is why being intentional is important in your life. You are intentionally choosing to serve others, to grow yourself, to take the higher road, and to live a life which positively impacts those around you. Remember this will not happen by chance or accident. But by you making intentional choices in every part of your life.
4) Serve Somewhere
It will be difficult to make an impact anywhere if you never choose to serve somewhere. No matter where you are in the process of transforming your life, start serving now. Find a place to serve others like a homeless shelter, a job training service, big brother/big sister, or simply assisting an neighbor with a chore. When you take the time to invest in others it removes the focus off yourself and gives you the ability to see the world, and yourself, more clearly.
Being able to serve others feels good and is how you are going to make an impact. Intentional impact will occur when you chose to see how you can serve others instead of how they can serve you. The knowing yourself and growing yourself will be manifested by serving others in some type of capacity. True transformation in your life is going to occur when you learn to give freely of yourself and not asking anything in return.
5) Give The Whole You
The last trait of a person living a life of intentional impact is they are all in. They don’t show up to serve, spend time with a friend over coffee, or try to grow themselves while constantly looking at their cell phone. Whatever moment they are in, they are all in. They give themselves to the moment to wring every possible drop of life out of what is occurring.
As author and speaker Kary Oberbrunner is constantly telling everyone around him to “show up filled up!” No matter the place or the circumstances, show up with a heart to learn, serve, and absorb what is occurring all around you. Get into a mindset that it is not all about you, but about a growing community around you where you truly can make an impact if you choose to give all you have and not just a part.
You have a choice today in how you want to live your life? Do you want to live for self and hope somewhere down the line something good happens? Or do you want to choose your own destiny, make some radical changes in your life, and live a life of intentional impact? These are the people who truly change the world and the next one could be you.
