Three Ways to Take Control of Your Thrival Life
We all like to think we have control of our lives. A delusion we convince ourselves of in order to not be overwhelmed by our circumstances. While it is true there are parts of our lives where we do have control, there are probably many other areas where we have very little or no control. This perceived lack of control can lead to stress, anxiety, and sometimes depression.
But then there are those areas of our lives where we could actually take control of our lives, yet we choose to let the circumstances or situation control us. Which is strange for such a control driven society.
What if you could take back control of different aspects of your life? What would you do? In a culture where marketers, employers, social media, media in general, and friends are telling us how to live our lives. Wouldn’t it be great to put a stake in the ground and take back control of our lives?
The first step is pretty simple. To stay consistent will be more challenging. But if you want to gain back control of your life then see what you can take from the following steps to begin the process of living a thriving life instead of simply surviving life.
Noise – Turn down the noise of the culture. With the average individual consuming almost 100,000 words a day through marketers, social media, and advertisements telling us how to live or who to be. Their goal is not your well-being, but for you to buy their product or act like them. Turn down the noise which is not contributing to a healthy life. Whether it be from magazines, social media, news, friends, or co-workers. Limit the noise which is nothing but a distraction to your pursuit of meaningful work.
Negativity – Turn down the negativity which seems to be pervasive in our society. We seemed to have lost the idea of promoting one thing or person, and instead have stooped to simply tearing apart the opponent. This attitude does nothing to contribute to your well-being and is a strong influence on your thoughts, emotions, and actions. Turn down the negativity around you in order to not be controlled by other people’s negative thoughts.
Outside Messages – Outside messages are those messages which are coming from advertisers, friends, or even family telling you how to live your life. These messages are attempting to convince you who you should be in life. While we can battle these messages periodically, we are so inundated with these messages they are seeping into our mind and soul without us even being aware. Turn down these outside messages in order for them to stop telling us how to live our lives.
Hate – Hate is on the rise in our society and we have to be proactive in stopping the affects in our lives. If you are listening to hateful news, following hateful individuals, or have a friend who is always hate filled. Then turn them off. Unfollow the friends on social media, turn off the news, and take a break from the hate filled friends. They are doing nothing to help you in living a thriving life. The more you receive hate filled messages the more you will lose control of your emotions. Which is not where you want to live.
Devices – If you feel as though you are glued to your computer or phone, then turn it off. Yes, you will live. Turn off you phone for an hour or even a day. Let it be a reminder there is more to do in life and in connecting with relationships than staring at a glowing screen. Especially if you feel more negative emotions after spending time on social media, news sights, or the internet in general, then turn it off. Stop letting objects control you and take back control of what is in your life.
Critics – No matter what you do you have a critic. Especially if you are creating some type of content, there will always be someone out there who is critical of what you are doing. Your main critic may even be in your head. Turn off the critics. They really don’t know much in general and probably know even less about you and your heart. Again, stop letting strangers control how you feel, what you should think, or how you should act. Turn them off and keep thriving.
Positivity – Negativity is a restraint which can keep you from any type of fulfilling life. But on the other hand being positive about life in general can produce unyielding benefits. Life is usually not as bad as we think. Yet, too often we get into a funk because of our inability to be positive about what life does have to offer. Stop letting other messages put you into a negative mindset. Choose positivity and live a life of fullness as you remember, with gratitude, all that you have or can accomplish.
Influence – Turning up a positive influence is a requirement we all too often dismiss. With all the negativity and noise attempting to control your life, find those positive and healthy influences around you which bring and give life to all you do. These could be friends, mentors, online coaches, books, seminars, or workshops. Invest in yourself as you take one step closer to being in control of your own life.
Focus – We are way too distracted in our day and age. The side effect of these distractions is that we are wasting valuable time instead of investing in meaningful work. If you can turn up the focus in your life, you will concentrate more on what matters. The noise which attempts to control your thoughts or actions will fall to the wayside because you understand the importance of your own meaningful work.
