Why Are You Surviving Life?
Are you surviving? Look at yourself in the mirror. Then ask yourself honestly, “are you loving every minute of life, or are you just surviving?”
In order to maintain a thrival life it takes constant work to protect your perimeter. There is an inordinate amount of distractions in this life which can easily bury you, if you are not constantly aware. If you are constantly listening to marketers, publishers, friends, social media, advertisements, and retailers; you will be trying to live the life THEY want you to live. Ultimately you will be frustrated with the repetition of keeping your head above water.
This is why you survive. But if you know this is happening in your life, then why don’t you do something about your situation. Sometimes it is not easy to recognize the signs you are living a survival life. Take some time to step back, look at your life, and see where you have been surviving, so you can make a dramatic, life fulfilling change.
You may want to make a change in your life, but you are too distracted to actively pursue change. Between work, family, hobbies, internet, and media your life is one big distraction after another. You have never taken the time to discover your passion and plan out your pursuits with passion. The end result is a life filled with chasing the next shiny object which comes your way.
Sometimes these distractions are so mind-numbing, they are simply keeping you from doing anything worthwhile. You know the feeling, you wake up, then before you know it you are heading back to bed. Then upon reflection, even though your day was packed, you were not very productive.
If you truly want to live a Thrival Life and to stop surviving life then you need to eliminate distractions in your life. Put your mind to it and there are probably 4 or 5 distractions you could eliminate today. Be diligent and precise in your pursuit of discovering the distractions in your life. Then ruthlessly eliminate the distractions which are keeping you from thriving.
You have worn the badge of busyness for so long it has become an acceptable way of living. Thinking you had to either prove your importance to others, or show your worth to yourself. You eventually attached yourself to anything which came along. If you were busy then you were important.
Unfortunately, busyness and importance have nothing to do with each other. All you have done is wear yourself out with very little to show for your efforts.
Busyness is the enemy of productivity and more specifically creativity. If you are busy you are probably running from task to task to put out fires. This type of work life does little to produce the good work from you.
Like distractions you could probably identify 3 or 4 activities you participate in which do nothing else but take your time. Do you really need to be on every committee at church and your children’s school? Take a deep breath, slow down, and find how much more creative you can be when you do not fill every moment of your schedule.
Some people flourish in surviving life, because no matter how chaotic their life may seem, it is comfortable to them. This may sound strange but, you can probably identify an unpleasant part of your life you “deal” with because you don’t know how to change. You don’t know what your life would look like with this unpleasantness, so you deal with it. You keep living life, because you don’t want to rock the boat.
Think about how many jobs you worked at, which drove you crazy. But you had bills to pay or not enough education. So, you just stayed in this uncomfortable place.
Change require risk! If you want to move from comfortable to content. Then you are going to have to take a risk to insight change in your life. Yes, it will be uncomfortable and unfamiliar at first. But the end result could be better than you ever imagined.
The last group surviving life are those who simply fear change. You don’t know what is on the other side of the hill, so you stay behind. The fear of change can be so griping it forces you to live lives you neither like or enjoy. Fear keeps you in relationships you don’t enjoy, jobs you hate, and circumstances where you think you have no control.
Think specifically about those areas of your life where you have let fear keep you in survival mode. Fear of losing an unhealthy relationship. Overwhelming fear if you left a job you hated. Or the unbearable fear of being alone, outcast, or not accepted. These fears will keep you on a constant search for identify only to leave you in a life of survival mode.
Take the first step to be bold and attack your fears. The irony of addressing your fears is the other side of fear is far less challenging than the life you chose to live in fear. When you look fear and the face and call it by name, the power is suddenly gone over your life.
Too many times you choose to survive life because making any type of change is too challenging. But be bold and don’t be afraid to risk. The other side of survival is a beautifully thriving life which makes every day worth living.
